Cagliari have sacked manager Walter Mazzarri after just four months in charge, following a 2-1 defeat to Bologna on Monday.

The Rossoblu have won just five of their 18 Serie A games under Mazzarri, and sit 19th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Leonardo Semplici, who was sacked by Cagliari in September, is the favourite to replace Mazzarri.

Mazzarri's departure comes as little surprise, with the Italian having come under increasing pressure in recent weeks.

The former Inter Milan and Napoli boss has failed to improve Cagliari's fortunes, and the club's hierarchy have decided to act.

Semplici is a popular figure at Cagliari, having led the club to promotion to Serie A in 2016.

The Italian is known for his attacking style of play, which could be just what Cagliari need to climb away from the relegation zone.

Mazzarri's sacking is the latest in a long line of managerial changes at Cagliari.

The club have had five different managers in the last two years, and have struggled to find stability.

Semplici will be hoping to provide that stability, and help Cagliari avoid relegation.
