Frustration in Wolfsburg: "Way too many goals conceded"
No rest for the weary: VfL Wolfsburg concede 6 goals against Gladbach in the DFB Cup
Disappointment in Wolfsburg after disappointing cup exit
VfL Wolfsburg have been eliminated from the DFB Cup in the second round after a 6-1 defeat to Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Wolves were outplayed by the Foals from the start and were already 3-0 down after just 20 minutes. Wolfsburg managed to pull one back through Jonas Wind in the second half, but Gladbach added three more goals to seal the victory.
The defeat was a major disappointment for Wolfsburg, who had hoped to make a good run in the cup this season. However, they were simply outclassed by a Gladbach side that was much sharper and more clinical in front of goal.
Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac was understandably frustrated after the game. "We conceded way too many goals today," he said. "We need to be much more solid defensively if we want to be successful."
The defeat was Wolfsburg's second in a row, following their 2-0 loss to Union Berlin in the Bundesliga last weekend. Kovac will be hoping that his team can bounce back when they face Eintracht Frankfurt in the league next Saturday.
Wolfsburg's elimination from the DFB Cup is a major blow to their hopes of winning a trophy this season. The Wolves have not won a major trophy since the 2015 DFB Cup, and they will now have to focus on their league campaign.
Wolfsburg are currently 12th in the Bundesliga table, and they will need to improve their form if they want to challenge for a European place. Kovac will be hoping that his team can put their recent poor form behind them and start to climb the table.
