German Federal Police Prevent Export of High-Value Camper After Theft
BPOLI PW - GdpD POM: Successful Intervention in Attempted Export of Stolen Camper
Background
On July 22, 2023, the German Federal Police (BPOLI) in Saxony intercepted the transport of a stolen camper worth over 100,000 euros in the border area with Poland. The vehicle was reported stolen from a campsite in Bavaria on July 20, 2023. The prompt response of the BPOLI prevented the camper from being taken abroad.
BPOLI Intervention
Acting on a tip-off, BPOLI officers stopped the transport vehicle on the A4 motorway near Görlitz. The driver, a Polish national, initially claimed to be the owner of the camper. However, inconsistencies in his story aroused suspicion, leading the officers to conduct a thorough inspection.
Upon further investigation, the BPOLI discovered that the camper's vehicle identification number (VIN) matched the stolen vehicle reported in Bavaria. The Polish driver was subsequently arrested, and the camper was seized by the BPOLI. The driver faces charges of theft and attempted transportation of stolen property.
Investigation and Recovery
The BPOLI is currently investigating the theft of the camper and the involvement of other individuals. The investigation includes reviewing surveillance footage from the campsite and tracking the movements of the suspects. The BPOLI is collaborating with the Bavarian police and Interpol to gather evidence and identify any accomplices.
Prevention Measures
The BPOLI urges camper owners to take preventive measures to protect their vehicles from theft:
- Always park in well-lit and secure areas.
- Use a steering wheel lock or other anti-theft devices.
- Install a tracking device in the camper.
- Keep valuables out of sight and remove any identifying documents.
- Report suspicious activity or attempted thefts promptly to the police.
BPOLI Commitment
The BPOLI is committed to combating theft and ensuring the safety and security of citizens. The successful prevention of this camper's export demonstrates the effectiveness of the BPOLI's border controls and the importance of public cooperation in preventing crime.
