FC St. Pauli are in party mood - Hamburg SV in need of explanation
Millerntor celebrates, Volksparkstadion mourns
After the top game in the 2nd Bundesliga between FC St. Pauli and Hamburger SV, there is no doubt about the balance of power in the north of the metropolis. The Kiezkicker won 3-0 (1-0) in front of 29,546 spectators at the Millerntor and thus not only extended their lead over their city rivals to 17 points, but also ended the Braun-Weiss series of seven unbeaten games. For Hamburg, on the other hand, it was the second bankruptcy in a row and leaves further questions about the sporting leadership around coach Tim Walter.
After the final whistle, the players of FC St. Pauli danced arm in arm with their fans on the lawn and sang their hearts out. The atmosphere at the Millerntor was almost like a championship party. The Hamburg players, on the other hand, disappeared in shame into the catacombs after their clear defeat.
FC St. Pauli had started the game better and took the lead through Etienne Amenyido (43rd). In the second half, Hamburg looked for a way back into the game, but was too harmless in the end. St. Pauli made it clear with two goals from David Otto (65th) and Johannes Eggestein (81st) that they are currently the better team in the north of the metropolis.
The victory of FC St. Pauli was not only deserved but also extremely important in the fight for promotion. The Kiezkicker are now six points clear of third place and are on course for a return to the Bundesliga. For Hamburg, on the other hand, the defeat is a setback. The Rothosen are now eight points behind the promotion ranks and urgently need to improve.
