Schalke 04 appoint Kees van Wonderen, former Vitesse Arnhem manager
Former Vitesse boss Kees van Wonderen has been appointed as Schalke 04's latest head coach, following the resignation of Dimitrios Grammozis two weeks ago.
van Wonderen is a former Dutch international with many years of experience at the helm of Dutch clubs NAC Breda, Go Ahead Eagles and Vitesse Arnhem. Schalke has found their replacement after it was announced on Tuesday that van Wonderen had agreed to take charge of the Royal Blues until June 2023.
The appointment of van Wonderen is not one that many Schalke fans would have predicted. The deal has come as a surprise to many, but van Wonderen has a proven track record of success in the Netherlands.
Schalke have endured a disappointing season to date. They are currently sitting in 15th place in the 2. Bundesliga standings. Schalke will be hoping that van Wonderen can turn their fortunes around and guide them back to the Bundesliga at the first time of asking.
van Wonderen's first game in charge of Schalke will be at home to SV Sandhausen on 12th April. Here he will be hoping to get off to a winning start and start to repay the faith that the Schalke hierachy has shown in him.
