SSV Jahn Regensburg reaches the DFB Cup Round of 16
A historic victory for the second division team
SSV Jahn Regensburg has sensationally reached the round of 16 of the DFB Cup.
The second division team from Bavaria defeated Bundesliga club Bayer 04 Leverkusen 4-3 on penalties in front of 15,210 spectators at the Jahnstadion on Tuesday evening.
In the shootout, Jahn goalkeeper Alexander Meyer parried the shot from Exequiel Palacios, while all four Jahn players converted their penalties to secure their place in the next round.
The match had ended 1-1 after extra time, with Jahn taking the lead through Andreas Albers in the 11th minute and Leverkusen equalizing through Moussa Diaby in the 58th minute.
The victory is a historic one for Jahn, who have never reached the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup before.
They will now face Bundesliga leaders Union Berlin in the round of 16 on March 4.
Jahn coach Mersad Selimbegovic was delighted with his team's performance.
"We played a great game against a very strong opponent," he said.
"We had a bit of luck in the penalty shootout, but we also deserved to win."
Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was disappointed with his team's performance, but he praised Jahn for their performance.
"Jahn played a very good game," he said.
"They were very well organized and they made it very difficult for us to create chances.
"We are disappointed to be out of the Cup, but we have to congratulate Jahn on their victory."
