Synopsis
In the Ludwigshafen district Melm, the body of the young veterinarian Maren Kaminski is found on a horse farm. Lena Odenthal and Mario Kopper take on the investigation.
Odenthal had a private contact with the murdered woman because she treated her horse. The chief veterinary officer Beate Winkler (Ulrike Krumbiegel) and the stable owner Ramin Esfahani (Arnd Klawitter) had access to the stable and therefore were able to commit the murder. The forensic doctor discovers traces of a deadly amanita mushroom in Kaminski's blood. In order to get to the perpetrator, Odenthal and Kopper question mushroom specialist Dr. Georg Sterneck (Hans Diehl), who tells them that the deadly bulbous amanita is not native to the Ludwigshafen area.
When the investigators discover private recordings from surveillance cameras, the investigation leads to the head of the horse clinic at Ludwigshafen University, Professor Dr. Thomas Bechstein (Martin Wuttke), with whom Kaminski had an affair. He admits that he had forbidden Kaminski to report the use of the mushroom poison Amanita bulbosa on Bechstein's racehorses. Kaminski had passed the information on to Esfahani, whom Bechstein had since threatened with expulsion from the university.
The police are able to prove that Bechstein had poisoned Kaminski's horse just before the crime and that the animal had passed the poison on to the murdered woman through its milk. Bechstein is arrested for murder.
