Thrashing in the second round: Weak SpVgg Greuther Fürth fails in the cup against Jahn Regensburg

Fürth suffers a bitter defeat

Bundesliga bottom SpVgg Greuther Fürth has been eliminated from the DFB Cup in the second round. The promoted team lost 0:3 (0:2) at third division Jahn Regensburg on Tuesday evening. Erik Wekesser (26th minute), Andreas Albers (38th) and Sebastian Ernst (61st) scored the goals for the hosts. Fürth, who had only won one of their first eight competitive games of the season, was thus eliminated from the cup competition early on.

Regensburg takes the lead

In front of 5,326 spectators in the Jahnstadion, Regensburg took the lead in the 26th minute. After a cross from the right by Sarpreet Singh, Wekesser headed in unmarked from close range at the far post. Fürth was unable to respond and Regensburg continued to control the game. In the 38th minute, Albers increased the lead with a volley from 18 meters into the far corner.

Fürth without a chance

After the change of sides, Fürth initially tried to increase the pressure, but Regensburg remained dangerous with counterattacks. In the 61st minute, Ernst made it 3-0 after a pass from Max Besuschkow. Fürth was unable to recover from this setback and Regensburg confidently brought the game to an end. The Fürth team now has to concentrate on the Bundesliga. On Saturday (3:30 p.m.), they will host Bayer Leverkusen.
