St. Pauli Pro Says: "Can be satisfied" Despite DFB Cup Loss
Table last, Cup out - but a good mood prevails at St. Pauli after the cup match in Freiburg
Despite the defeat on penalties in the second round of the DFB Cup at SC Freiburg, the mood was good at FC St. Pauli. "We can be satisfied with what we've done," said captain Jackson Irvine after the 2-2 draw after extra time and the subsequent defeat on penalties (2-4).
Before the game, hardly anyone would have expected the Kiezkicker to still be in the game after 90 minutes against the Bundesliga sixth. In Freiburg, however, the second division team defended passionately, was dangerous going forward and only conceded the 1-1 equaliser in the final minute of regulation time.
The 2-1 lead in extra time was not enough for a surprise, but the performance against the Bundesliga team gave the Kiezkicker confidence for the upcoming tasks in the 2. Bundesliga.
"We're a bit disappointed that we didn't win, but we showed a good performance," said St. Pauli coach Timo Schultz, who was pleased with his team's fighting spirit: "We played with a lot of passion and commitment and gave a good advertisement for St. Pauli."
Captain Irvine also praised the team's performance: "We showed that we can compete with a team from the Bundesliga. That gives us a lot of confidence for the future.
On Saturday (1 p.m.), the Kiezkicker will continue in the league at home against SV Sandhausen. Then it's all about getting back on the road to success in the league after two defeats in a row.
